“Don’t wish it away
Don’t look at it like it’s forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better”
Lyrics from “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”
Elton John could be singing to Paul Jewell after his beloved Watford took all three points from Portman Road, although he would probably rather listen to “I’m Still standing” -
“You could never know what it’s like
Your blood like winter freezes just like ice
And there’s a cold lonely light that shines from you
You’ll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use
And did you think this fool could never win
Well look at me, I’m coming back again
I got a taste of love in a simple way
And if you need to know while I’m still standing you just fade away
Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I’m still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind
I’m still standing yeah yeah yeah
I’m still standing yeah yeah yeah”
It’s now seven straight defeats for Ipswich and the knives are out for the manager who slated his team big time following the 4-0 reverse midweek at Burnley. He has had the dreaded vote of confidence from “The Invisible Man” so watch this space! After Sunderland sacked Steve Bruce on Thursday I tweeted “It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that an ex Norwich captain could be next #itfc manager. Be careful what you wish for!” Personally I like Jewell and am not sure that we could attract a better manager, if we did are we going to have another clear out and another false dawn?
Before the kickoff there was a minutes applause in memory of Gary Speed who was found hanged in his garage last Sunday, A very sad end of a life that seemed to promise so much for the future. I really feel for his family particularly his two sons who may never come to terms with his passing. it certainly made me realise that if losing a few football matches is all I’ve got to worry about then I’m a very lucky man.
Away from the doom and gloom I decided to be positive about Saturdays match. going to football should be an enjoyable experience, an afternoon of live entertainment and hopefully seeing your team win, in reality this only happens to a minority of fans, the majority of us just dream our respective teams could compete with the likes of Man Utd or Barcelona.
I put a bet on a 3-1 victory with Keith Andrews scoring first. He did his bit just before halftime but Watford scored twice in the second half to seal Towns fate.
This was a far better performance, the crowd got behind the team who showed a lot more desire than of late producing enough chances to win two games let alone one! In truth we were unlucky to lose but when you’re on a run like we are the chances just don’t go in.
We are now fourth from bottom above Forest on goal difference but only twelve points from the playoffs. The next few weeks will answer some questions.
Has PJ made bad signings like Dukey and the JET?
Daniel (Collins) is leaving next Saturday night and its plain
That we’ll miss him so much, the back four just won’t be the same!
But will he return in the new year? Doubtful.
The candle’s still burning even if the legends have all gone.
And for the record (no pun intended) here’s a reminder of the good old days-an adaptation of “Crocodile Rock”
I remember when I was young
Me and Ipswich had so much fun
Clapping hands we never moaned
Had a decent team that could win at home
But the biggest thrill I ever got was going to Wembley and winning the cup
While the other teams were Reeling from the shock
We were hopping and bopping to the Beattie Rock
Well, Beattie Rocking is something shocking
When your feet just can’t keep still
I never knew me a better time and I guess I never will
Oh Lawdy mama those Floodlit nights
When Warkie wore his shorts too tight
And the Beattie Rocking was out of sight
But the years went by and Bobby Robson died
Beattie went and left us for some foreign guy
Long nights crying bout the goal machine
Dreaming of Paul Mariner and my old blue team
But they’ll never kill the thrills we’ve got burning up to the Beattie Rock
Learning fast as the seasons past
We really thought the European dream would last.
