Blackpool away was never on the radar but when the club offered free coach travel (following the 7-1 mauling at Peterborough) we decided to take advantage. Max and the legendary Jack Curl came along with us and in total there were around 1500 traveling fans, with the club laying on thirteen coaches.
Following a Friday night out with my brother Ivan and sister in law Jacqui at the Spread Eagle for a “Matt White & The Emulsions” gig I was not thrilled to hear the alarm at 5.30am on Saturday in preparation for the 7am departure from Portman Road. The trip up to Lancashire passed really quickly, stopping just once at Worksop where we sat and had a picnic, met up with some Mackems who were going to the Sunderland v Chelsea game. We arrived at Bloomfield Road just before 1 0'clock leaving plenty of time for a look around. We went in to the ground at around 2pm thinking that we could have a beer only to find soft drinks only! I don’t normally bother to have a beer at football but with not having to drive had decided to have a couple, why not?
As we sat killing time Max said “I don’t believe it, it’s that bloke who had his wedding reception at my pub” (The Ramsholt Arms) “I’m sure that’s Phil Ham” I said and after a short conversation between them I was proved right! “He’s often in the pub, if I had known we could have had some footie chat”! Phil was as bad “Max I didn’t know that you were a Town fan”!
With Paul Jewell signing Danny Collins Friday morning from Stoke on loan completing his “dirty dozen” there was room for optimism I went for a 2-2 draw. First half we looked the better team but didn’t turn it into goals. Like the recent home match versus Hull we just didn’t turn up for the second half and went 2-0 down through Taylor-Fletcher & Ferguson with 30 minutes left to play!
There is such a lack of belief from the players and the fans at the moment when we go a goal behind, everybody was quite confident during the interval but as soon as Blackpool took the lead the negativity started. We had a really foul mouthed woman behind us and all of a sudden we were a “bunch of useless c**ts”,“ relegation certs” and even Jimmy Bullard was a “hairy useless c**nt”! I don’t mind the choice language but what’s the point of traveling 250 miles to slate your team? And coming from a woman - don’t get me started!! Fortunately she left 10 minutes from the end, she had threatened to go if Blackpool scored a third - I almost wanted them to! I felt sorry for the bloke that she was with, the pressure on him to perform on her pleasure beach must be immense!!
Jewell swopped Leadbitter and Bowyer with JET and Scotland went for a more 442 but we just didn’t have it, it took until the 90th minute to have a shot on target Murphy (after squandering a couple of earlier efforts) forcing a good save from Gilkes.
We left Blackpool at about 5.15pm and following a short break were back in Ipswich at 11pm. I really enjoyed the day out it was practice for retirement- a way off at the moment (free bus travel and a day trip to the seaside)!
