It was certainly cold at Portman Road for the last home game of 2011. Another disappointing year which had promised much and delivered little. There was the inevitable Christmas “things” going on in and around the ground such as the Salvation Army band playing outside the North Stand and Santa (are you Evans in disguise) welcoming supporters into Planet Blue. Max was back in town and took the role of carer for Kev (he’s such a good volunteer!) leaving Tracey free to put the decs and tree up at home.
With David Stockdale now being recalled by parent club Fulham and Richard Wright still recovering from his shoulder injury (although fit enough to be on the bench) it was down to Aaron Lee Barrett to keep goal. He took his chance well, making four really good saves in the first half which laid the foundations for our win.
The flirtation with relegation is over for a little while thanks to the bold decision by the linesman to award Andrews his 9th goal of the season just after the restart. The referee could not tell from his position if the ball had crossed the line and play continued for what seemed like an age before he acknowledged his assistants flag, stopped the match and after a brief chat pointed to the centre circle, thus awarding the goal, a decision which did not endear him to the Rams manager Nigel Clough. It was far from a great game but a wins a win, the bonus of a rare clean sheet for the team with the worse defence in all four leagues was another plus.
