To mark the 50th anniversary of Ipswich winning the 1961/62 First Division Championship (that’s the Premier League in old money) the South Stand was renamed the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand in honour of the man who managed the team and who then went on to lead England to their only World Cup win (to date!) in 1966. Six of that winning side were present with the trophy that they had won against all the odds, captain Andy Nelson alongside Ray Crawford, Larry Carberry, John Compton, Doug Moran and Ted Phillips cut the ribbon in the centre circle before the start of the match.
Another one-nil home win but in truth it should have been more like four-nil, with so many chances being wasted. There was another cheap ticket offer for the game and a crowd of 20,005 turned up for what in my opinion was the dullest game of the season so far, not much of an incentive to come back for more. Loanee Daryl Murphy’s 49th minute goal decided the match but other than he and Lee Martin missing good opportunities and JET hitting the bar there was little to get very excited about. Perhaps if we had something to play for Other than finishing in the top half of the table I might be a little more enthusiastic, that said it’s never a bad thing to win.
